Drywood termites

Dampwood termites

Drywood termites are known for thriving in hard, dry wood found inside a home.  This includes structural timbers, furniture, picture frames and  banisters. They do live in colonies under the soil. They will make their way into the wood and ingest that wood.

There are several signs that can indicate a termite problem in your home. Here are a few things to look out for:

  1. Mud tubes: Termites build mud tubes to travel from their nest to their food source, and these can be found on walls or foundations. Look for thin, pencil-sized tubes along the walls or exterior of your home.
  2. Wood damage: Termites feed on wood, so look for signs of damage such as hollowed-out wood, sagging floors, or peeling paint that may indicate the presence of termites.
  3. Discarded wings: Termites swarm when they are looking to mate, and once they have found a mate, they shed their wings. If you find discarded wings around your home, it could be a sign that termites are present.
  4. Noises in the walls: You may be able to hear clicking or rustling sounds coming from inside the walls if there are termites present.
  5. Frass: This is termite droppings and can resemble sawdust or small pellets. Look for frass around wooden structures or in places where you suspect termites may be present.

If you suspect that you have a termite problem, it's important to contact a professional pest control company to assess the situation and provide treatment options.

Termites and flying ants are often mistaken for each other due to their similar appearance, but there are several key differences between the two:

  1. Body shape: Termites have a broad waist and a straight, thick-walled body, while flying ants have a narrow waist and a curved body.
  2. Antennae: Termites have straight antennae, while flying ants have elbowed or bent antennae.
  3. Wings: Both termites and flying ants have two pairs of wings, but termite wings are equal in size and shape and are twice as long as their body, while flying ant wings are different in size and shape, with the front wings being larger than the hind wings.
  4. Behavior: Termites are known for causing significant damage to wooden structures, while flying ants are more commonly seen during mating season and are not considered to be as destructive.

In summary, while termites and flying ants may look similar, they have distinct differences in body shape, antennae, wings, and behavior.

Termites can cause significant damage to buildings and homes if left unchecked. Here are some steps you can take to prevent termites:

  1. Schedule regular inspections: Have a professional termite inspection at least once a year, even if you don't see any signs of termites. Early detection is key to preventing damage.
  2. Eliminate moisture: Termites thrive in damp environments, so reducing moisture levels around your home is crucial. Fix any leaks in pipes, faucets, or air conditioning units, and make sure that water drains away from your home's foundation.
  3. Remove wood debris: Termites feed on wood, so remove any wood debris or piles from around your property. Store firewood at least 20 feet away from your home and 5 inches off the ground.
  4. Consider termite treatment: If you live in an area with a high risk of termite infestation, consider having your home treated with termite-resistant materials or applying termite control products to your property. Consult with a pest control professional to determine the best option for your specific situation.

By following these steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of termites infesting your home.
